With influences from his homeland Cameroon, his musical experience in Europe and the New York jazz scene of the 1990s, Richard Bona is a versatile bass player who forms an ideal combination with the Grammy-winning Metropole Orkest.

Cameroon-born, New York-based Richard Bona is known for his unique musical style; his sound is often inspired by African rhythms and in his lyrics he tells stories about social issues such as oppression.

Bona started making music at a very young age in the church in the small town in Cameroon where he grew up. At the age of 13 he was already performing in jazz clubs in the capital Douala. Inspired by the music of Jaco Pastorius, Bona left for Europe at the age of 22 to study jazz in Düsseldorf, took a detour to France and ended up in New York, where he quickly became a big name in the international jazz scene. In 1999 he released his successful solo debut Scenes from My Life, after having previously collaborated with iconic artists such as Pat Metheny, Quincy Jones, Joe Zawinul, Chaka Khan, Bobby McFerrin, George Benson, Branford Marsalis and Steve Gadd. In the following years he released no fewer than seven albums; his fourth album was even nominated for a Grammy.

The Metropole Orkest and the bass player are no strangers. Metropole Orkest invited Bona in as a soloist for its International Arrangers Workshop in 2013 and found mutual ground in using music as a universal language. After once again having shared the stage at the 2016 Quincy Jones Prom they have now found the perfect time to work on crafting an even richer fusion of music styles. With the Metropole Orkest Richard Bona will be bringing orchestral versions of his best work and newly composed music.
