Ek Sur: Songs of India

Zangam keeps the beautiful Indian heritage alive and presents old and new repertoire in a contemporary setting. The choir selects songs from its own repertoire with varied themes from different regions of India. From songs with spiritual, devotional and Sufi content to regional folklore and classical Indian music. From Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to Bengal and the Punjab. Zangam spices the program with a pinch of Bollywood. The songs from this mega Hindi film industry are popular all over the world and have enormous appeal.

The music and poetry are partly traditional, partly classical and sometimes specially composed. Zangam performs these songs in her own style and in her own musical arrangements. Zangam's conductor, Samhita Mundkur, makes the songs suitable and special for singing as a choir, with respect for traditional musical concepts. She also takes care of the coordination with the music. The arrangements are based on certain harmonies and elements of polyphony. Depending on the song, there are short solos or the choir sings the same parts in small groups in different ways. Samhita Mundkur also makes several new compositions for the choir, each based on a specific raga.

To create new collaborations and allow the audience to experience a total experience, Zangam collaborates for this program with musicians on tabla, bansuri and sitar, with singers Shashwathi Jagadish and Deepak Doddera, with singers from the Residentie Bach Choir and with the dancers of Natraj Dance Academy led by Rajni Ghiraw.
