A classic piece set alongside rediscovered repertoire: the Residentie Orkest plays Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No.1, as well as work by the neglected Jewish composer Schulhoff.

Programme

Schulhoff Suite voor kamerorkest
Schulhoff Menschheit, symfonie voor alt en orkest
Mahler Symfonie nr. 1 ‘Titan’

Led by chief conductor Jun Märkl, the Residentie Orkest pays tribute to Gustav Mahler. His impressive Symphony No.1, also known as Titan, is full of surprises: from the awakening of nature and a peasant dance to a macabre-ironic variation on Father Jacob and influences of Jewish klezmer music: a reflection of Mahler’s cultural roots. This rich and versatile masterpiece forms an intriguing dialogue with the work by the regrettably forgotten composer Erwin Schulhoff.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

Of Czech-Jewish background, composer Erwin Schulhoff was a musical chameleon influenced by impressionism, dadaism, Viennese Classicism, Slavic folk music and jazz. As a Jew, a communist and an activist, he died in a German death camp during the Second World War. But his music lives on, and this evening will first feature his jazzy Suite for Chamber Orchestra. This is followed by the piercing vocal composition Menschheit, with mezzo soprano Barbara Kozelj beautifully conveying the wonder and the vulnerability of humanity.
