This successful production by Ted Huffman was a crowd favourite at the Aix-en-Provence festival (2022) and in Versailles (2023). Reason enough for De Nederlandse Reisopera to be the first to bring this opera to the Netherlands!

Under the bloody regime of the young emperor Nerone, nothing and no one can prevent the rise of the beautiful and immoral Poppea. Even the most flamboyant Shakespearean dramas and the best TV series of today cannot match this production’s exposition of human passions – whether in the bedroom or the political arena.

The story of Poppea’s coronation displays the best and the worst of humanity through a range of ambivalent protagonists and colourful supporting characters, combined with Monteverdi’s gripping music. Director Ted Huffman presents a role play that reveals the mechanisms underlying human society as an eternal comedy of power and seduction.

Immensely overweight sopranos gesticulating wildly as they shatter wineglasses with sheer vocal power: when it comes to opera, the stereotypes are larger than life. Many also find its pompous and elitist character off-putting, which is a pity: once you get past your initial scepticism, you’ll find a magical world just waiting to be discovered.
