In 2001, a young Widad Mjama stepped into the spotlight as Morocco’s first female rapper in the completely male-dominated underground scene of Casablanca. She eventually went to study in France and immersed herself in the African music scene. In her latest project Aïta Mon Amour, she digs deeper into her fascination with the ‘sheikhhats’; the strong and powerful ‘rebel’ singers of the Moroccan Aïta, together with Khalil Epi, electronic musician and expert in playing the loutar.

Aïta is a musical form that originated centuries ago in the Moroccan countryside and expresses pain, joy and especially love. The singers were popular at the time but also had a low status, as the women travelled with men and also smoked and drank. Nowadays it is considered respectful and important. Aïta still has a major social role. For women it is an expression of freedom, and the younger generations are inspired by it, such as singer Widad Mjama. She wants to bring this typical Moroccan poetic form of music out of oblivion and make it sound in a contemporary and digital way.

Like a passing of the torch between two generations, Widad creates with this project a musical story with poems and songs that create a link between tradition and modernity. True to the spirit and power of its origins, Aïta Mon Amour is a powerful, moving journey through the history of the women of Aïta.
