Iconic Michael Kiwanuka kicks off tour in Amare
27 February 2025, retrospect
Loving visuals, crystal clear vocals, and a merciless band. On Monday 24 February Michael Kiwanuka kicked off his Small Changes tour in Amare. As brilliant as he is, Kiwanuka managed to captivate and intoxicate the entire audience with his warm voice and sensitivity.
“Nobody sings as tenderly as Michael Kiwanuka”, reads the headline of newspaper NRC, which rated the concert with four stars. The talented, modest man with Ugandan roots and a honey-sweet voice, has been standing out for some time now with the most emotionally compelling contemporary soul sound of recent years. Amare was therefore very proud to welcome Kiwanuka, in collaboration with PAARD, in the Concertzaal.
Michael Kiwanuka rarely plays for audiences of less than 6000 people. The concert in Amare’s Concertzaal for 2500 people however was not a try-out, but a celebration of Kiwanuka’s belief that music should sound “homemade and artisanal”, like a tailor-made suit. The more intimate setting was very gratefully received by the audience, who hung on to Kiwanuka’s every word from the beginning to end and visibly enjoyed every note.
