The premiere of community opera Maduro

2 September 2022, retrospect

On Thursday 1 September, the history of war hero George Maduro came to life in the premiere of community opera Maduro.

One hundred singers, the musicians of the Residentie Orkest, the dancers of the De Dutch Don’t Dance Division, and a cast that includes Alexander de Jong, Doris Baaten and Marlies Ruigrok, together delivered a smashing first performance.

Maduro recounts the story of the Jewish resistance hero George Maduro: his life, his unhappy love, his heroism and tragic death, interwoven with the story of how the miniature city of Madurodam came to be, the monument that continues to keep his memory alive.

The premiere was staged in a sold-out Danstheater. Among the audience were surviving relatives of George Maduro and several dignitaries including the ministers of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, and alderman for Mobility and Culture, Robert van Asten.
