Looking back on the Day of Peace
26 September 2024, retrospect
On 21 September, Amare was a place to celebrate and commemorate during Day of Peace. We look back on an eventful day that moved us to tears and connected people.
The Day of Peace is an international day on which we reflect on peace worldwide. And even more so in The Hague, the city that has been our city of peace and justice for 125 years! Thanks to many collaborations with partners from the city and far beyond, we presented a freely accessible programme in Amare to reflect on peace on this day. With special attention to the importance of a safe haven for children growing up in war zones.
The day started with a theatre programme with the short performance From Here On: together with international theatre makers Good Chance and Gecko, young people and women from The Hague presented a very moving piece of physical theatre about displacement, movement and being forced to find a new home. There was also room for Stories of Change by Roos Meijer & band and a conversation with Leila Prnjavorac about making a difference.
At the Kunstenplein, children were able make drawings about peace for a project by Colors for Peace. Stichting Denkroutes presented a new book “In Search of Peace – Jazzy & Bertha von Suttner”. On the 1st floor you could find the exhibition “Amal, this is my City”, by the residents of the former Ministry of Social Affairs (SOZA). In Filmhuis Den Haag people could watch the documentary The Mind Game, about the psychological pressure that young refugees are exposed to. And there were publicly accessible concerts by Scratchdag Latino, Misa Criolla and Constantijn Sinfonietta.
In the evening, participants could join the Peace Dinner, an initiative of De Participatie Keuken and Gemeente Den Haag. And the tasty meal and valuable conversations were very much enjoyed!
We are looking back on a valuable day thanks to many wonderful collaborations and encounters.
Tips! Until 7 October, you can still visit the exhibitions In Search of Peace and Amal, This is My City in Amare. During Day of Peace, the documentary Truus' Children was mentioned several times. Would you like to watch this documentary? Send an email to the makers.
