Carmina Burana, from 1937, ranks among the most famous 20th-century compositions. And quite rightly so, given the German composer Carl Orff’s spectacular accomplishment in putting medieval texts about drinking, gambling, sex and love to modern music.

Shortly before the Russian invasion, Ukraine’s National Opera & Ballet premiered a unique rendition, entirely according to Orff’s vision: 135 performers blending a range of art disciplines into a single, riveting audiovisual experience. This tremendous feat is now repeated by top performers, solo vocalists, ballet dancers, a choir and an orchestra from the war ravaged region. Certainly in view of the piece’s underlying message, it makes this evening all the more special.

The best-known song, O Fortuna, is a hymn to the goddess of fate and often features in films, commercials and DJ remixes. Life is unpredictable. Sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don’t. Be sure therefore to relish the moments of joy: that’s what Orff’s masterpiece tells us.
