The graphic novel is about Jazzy, Bertha von Suttner and The Hague as a city of Peace and Justice and will be published on 21 September, the International Day of Peace. The book is part of the project "Vrede Verbeeld - Picturing Peace - Frieden vorgestellt" by Stichting Denkroutes.
The Graphic Novel
The comic (65 pages) is about young photographer Jazzy from The Hague who receives a photo assignment: she must visually capture the legacy of feminist and pacifist Bertha von Suttner for The Hague as a city of Peace and Justice. In her research, she discovers Bertha von Suttner's world-famous novel The Arms Down! And while reading over her shoulder, we too get the most accessible version of that story in our laps.
In the last 15 pages of the book, we describe Bertha von Suttner's very adventurous life and provide more historical context around her novel and the four times she visited The Hague. We also further explain the locations in The Hague that play a role in the graphic novel. The historical photos from the Hague Municipal Archives and others make this a very relevant resource about Bertha von Suttner - even for those in the know!
