Djuwa Mroivili & James Oesie
BIG BANG Festival
Sun 13 Apr
Sun 13 Apr ’25

Double bass soloist James Oesi and pianist Djuwa Mroivili team up for the first time ever for this special programme full of well-known and less well-known classical repertoire.

Concentrating on the late 19th and early 20th century with works by Dvořák, Brahms and Gerswhin, Mroivili and Oesi also present music by classical composers of colour from that same era. From England there’s Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and from the United States there are Florence Price, William Grant Still and Robert Nathaniel Dett. Although these composers had a strong influence on their contemporaries, it is only in recent years that the wider public is hearing their names and their music. Oesi and Mroivili are also adding traditional Afro-American works to the programme that had a clear impact on Dvořák and Gershwin, giving the present-day audience a better understanding of the context of their work.
