From Mendelsohn’s storm-tossed seas to Handel’s fireworks, this is a journey through British musical history. Egarr conducts an evening full of nature, romance and royal splendour.

Programme

Mendelssohn Ouverture ‘Die Hebriden’
Vaughan Williams Suite voor altviool en orkest
Handel Water Music
Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks

The Residentie Orkest celebrates the sounds of Britain in an elaborate and spirited programme. Principal guest conductor Richard Egarr begins with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, an orchestral ode to the rugged nature of Scotland, evocative and picturesque beyond measure. Inspired by his visit to the island of Staffa, Mendelssohn paints a musical picture of the rough sea pounding on the Scottish shore and the echoing silence of the landscape.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

Next, Timothy Ridout uses his warm, expressive style to lay bare the soul of Vaughan Williams’s intimate Suite for Viola and Orchestra. After the intermission, Egarr leads the orchestra in two works by Handel – who, as a naturalised British citizen, clearly belongs in a programme such as this one. The dance-like Water Music evokes the atmosphere of a festive boating trip on the Thames, and the musical explosions of The Royal Fireworks promise a spectacular conclusion. An evening full of nature, poetry and royal splendour, performed by masterful musicians.
