He almost shared his name with J.S. Bach: Johann Sebastiani. The fellow countryman of the Thomascantor composed his own version of the story about half a century before Bach's iconic St. Matthew Passion.

Programme

J. Sebastiani St. Matthew Passion
A. Steffani Stabat Mater

In this compact work, Sebastiani sets an important trend with the addition of Lutheran chorales. The evangelist as tenor and Christ as bass also sound familiar to us today. The moving Stabat Mater by Agostino Steffani - his last and very best work - completes this captivating baroque diptych.
