In La Reina del Metal, dance maker Vanesa Aibar and percussionist Enric Monfort probe the limits of sound and movement – to the extreme. Combining flamenco rhythms, blistering metal percussion and electronic music, they conjure up an astounding flamenco soundscape.

Body becomes sound. And sound becomes body. Clad in chains, Aibar strides and dances on the brink of exhaustion to shake off the shackles of flamenco. Accompanied by the versatile instrumentalist  Enric Monfort, in La Reina del Metal she evokes new and exciting flamenco panorama’s. The spatial sound system of the Dutch collective v 4DSOUND immerses the audience in a flamenco sound chamber that will continue to resound long after the final applause. 

Dance maker Vanesa Aibar (Jaén, 1983) was one of the surprises at the 2019 Flamenco Biennale. That is also where she met percussionist and versatile instrumentalist Enric Monfort (Valencia, 1979), with whom she created this new work at the festival’s request.

La Reina del Metal is the festival creation of the 2023 Flamenco Biennale. It premiered in Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in January 2023, after which it embarked on a triumphant tour in Spain. Among other awards and accolades, La Reina was proclaimed the best dance performance at the Spanish performing arts awards, the Premios Max.
