The Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923-2006) wrote two immensely influential string quartets separated by a period of fifteen years. 

Programme

György Ligeti String Quartet No. 1 "Métamorphoses nocturnes"
György Ligeti String Quartet No. 2

In that period, he evolved from a disciple of Bartók and his folk music-inspired style to a pioneer of new music.
