A tempestuous concert for orchestra and piano. Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto, performed by star pianist Lucas Jussen, rubs shoulders with Walton’s temperamental First Symphony: a fascinating combination.

Programme

Beethoven Pianoconcert nr. 5 ‘Keizer’
Walton Symfonie nr. 1

As Napoleon’s troops beleaguered the city of Vienna, Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Emperor Concerto. It was not Beethoven who named his Piano Concerto No.5 thus, but you only need to listen to the music to understand the name. It is a grand, majestic and heroic work, fittingly placed in the hands of pianist Lucas Jussen, well-known for his Beethoven interpretations. The music forms a striking combination with the second part of the evening: William Walton’s idiosyncratic First Symphony

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

‘Play like you’re angry!’ William Walton commented. ‘Play lively, fiery!’ His First Symphony is turbulent, harried, sometimes sad, but concludes with triumphant determination. With this highly innovative piece, Walton bridged Romanticism with Modernism. It forms a fascinating combination with Beethoven, as another hero who managed to bridge musical traditions. Lucas Jussen is a worldwide piano celebrity, and this evening he shares the stage with Amare’s principal guest conductor, Richard Egarr.
