It’s one of the best-loved works from the Romantic period: Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No.9. His journey to New York had made an overwhelming impression – which he converted into an overwhelming composition.

Programme

One Minute Symphony
Jeths Suite ‘Ritratto’
Schumann Celloconcert
Dvořák Symfonie nr. 9 ‘Uit de nieuwe wereld’

Antonín Dvořák spent some time in New York at the end of the nineteenth century -- in the new world, where new people arrived every day and the streets buzzed with life and promise. The Bohemian composer sucked up all the energy to write his very last symphony, his ninth, also known as the Symphony from the New World. New influences, new styles, new ideas: the maestro contrasted them with his own working class background and composed a piece that transcends time and space.

Cloakroom and drink
Cloakroom and an intermission drink are included. If the event does not have an intermission, you will receive the drink afterwards.

Dvořák demonstrated how art can transcend the boundaries of geography and background to create something universal. Willem Jeths achieved the same with his Ritratto. This Dutch composer wrote the story of a flamboyant Italian marquise, Luisa Casati, a muse who dreams of rising above the suffering of the ordinary world and becoming a living work of art. Cellist Julia Hagen will furthermore be making her debut with the Residentie Orkest, performing Schumann’s lyrical, temperamental and virtuoso Cello Concerto. He wrote the piece in just two weeks, with an energy that remains palpable. Conductor Pablo Gonzàlez will lead this exciting dialogue between cello and orchestra.
