Schubert’s Octet is a masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of chamber music. Grand yet intimate, symphonic yet charming. A true gem for music lovers.

Programme

Schubert Octet

Franz Schubert’s Octet overflows with lyricism, colour and playful energy. Schubert composed the piece in 1824 at the request of a Viennese nobleman who played the clarinet, resulting in a unique combination of strings and wind. With the unique seating arrangement surrounding the ensemble, this work sounds not just festive and sophisticated, but intimate and introspective as well.

Although originally inspired by Beethoven’s Septet, Schubert went a step further: he created a work in six movements that feels both charming and symphonic. The composer’s melodic genius is abundantly clear, with intricate dialogues between violin, clarinet, horn and bassoon, supported by the rich depth of viola, cello and double bass. His unique instrumentation manages to give each instrument a distinct voice, without disrupting the harmonious whole of the music. The melodies are lilting and almost vocal in nature – an echo of Schubert’s art of the song.
