A short and varied evening with the Groot Omroepkoor and Fauré’s divine Requiem

Programme

H. Andriessen Miroir de peine
Beethoven Symfonie nr. 4
Fauré Requiem (versie 1900)

One of Europe’s best choirs, the Groot Omroepkoor returns to The Hague to perform Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem: one of the most beautiful requiems ever composed. This work opens the heart, with waves of sentiment hand in hand with gentle consolation. This requiem is not a farewell, but an homage to life itself. It is a requiem for those who remain and carry on living.

There is no funeral hymn comparable to Fauré’s. The intimacy, the serenity – all fears and concerns are released, leaving only timelessness. Soprano Judith van Wanroij, famous for her intensely dramatic interpretations, and baritone Raoul Steffani, winner of the 2023 Nederlandse Muziekprijs, perform with New Zealand’s Tianyi Lu as conductor. Lu is known for her frank and creative style. She is the perfect choice to not only convey the intimacy of Fauré but also Beethoven’s playful and charming Symphony No.4, and the incredibly touching Miroir de peine by Hendrik Andriessen. This composition features beautiful vocal lines that immerse the listener in the passion of Christ, but then from the perspective of his mother Mary.
